Behavioral Health Milieu Assistant

Job DescriptionGeneral SummaryUnder the supervision and/or direction of the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse, monitors patient care activities and the environment to maintain the therapeutic milieu and safety for an adult population of psychiatrically ill patients on the behavioral health unit.
Patients range from age 18 to geriatric.
Principal Responsibilities and TasksThe following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.

Develops and promotes a constructive/positive atmosphere within the work area by being out in the milieu utilizing a patient-centered approach.
Reports problems and resolution of problems regarding patients, staff, visitors, etc.
, to the nurse in a timely manner.
Is able to recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
Utilizes de-escalation techniques as taught in the MOAB course- Management of Aggressive Behavior.
Communicates observations and pertinent information to be utilized by the RN in the assessment of the patients' physical and mental changes, including age-specific and cultural needs.
Participates in handoff report and maintains an awareness of patients' potential for violence.
Demonstrates compliance with patient safety protocols.
Safely transports, transfers, and ambulates patients using appropriate body mechanics.
Assures the environment of care is maintained according to hospital and regulatory guidelines.
Maintains cleanliness of the patients' environment.
Performs appropriate hand hygiene.
Demonstrates the ability to maintain cooperation with and assist fellow team members, physicians, volunteers and patients.

AA or Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Counseling or related field or experience in the behavioral health field in lieu of degree.
Current BLS required.
Previous experience in a behavioral health setting preferred.
Must complete management of aggressive behavior (MOAB) courses provided by ERDD Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesAbility to:
a) read, write and comprehend medical and psychiatric terminology; b) demonstrates maturity, tact, judgement and sensitivity to people; c) responds to psychiatric emergency situations appropriately utilizing MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior); d) effectively convey verbal and written information; e) effectively function as a member of a collaborative team; f) follow directions; e) understands and respects importance of patient privacy and confidentiality; f) organize and manage time effectively, setting appropriate priorities; g) develops and promotes a constructive/positive atmosphere within the work area by demonstrating the ability to maintain cooperation with and assist fellow health team members, physicians, intra and inter-departments, hospital and nursing administration; h) comply with OSHA standards.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
